Skin-Care that Fights Pollution?

Dermatologist's have recently linked anti-aging and some cancers to pollution? That sounds crazy to me, but it also makes a little sense I suppose. How do you combat pollution though? Its everywhere, and depending on where you are, it can be worse for you than for me. How would a brand be able to market skin care in only those specific areas where pollution is more of an issue? See, even I have questions sometimes!

I started to do my research and realized that this is something that I need to pay attention to, the results are quite eye-opening.

"Nitrogen dioxide, soot, and carbon dioxide are very common in cities and the tiny particulates can easily infiltrate the skin barrier, penetrating to the deeper levels and causing damage," says aesthetician Corinne Morley of Trilogy skincare. "New evidence shows that exposure to pollution generates free radicals that can damage and age the skin in the same way as UV rays from the sun do." -InStyle Magazine Online
I also realized that they weren't the only ones reporting some interviews with Doctors commenting about the damage from pollution.

“Pollution causes oxidative stress to the skin,” says dermatologist Amy Wechsler, M.D. “Oxidants break down collagen and cause damage to DNA, which over time causes wrinkles and skin cancer.”- Vogue Online

I was hoping that some of my favorite brands had some more advice on products. And after chatting with a couple of my favorite chemists, I realized, (although this may have some truth to it) it doesn't matter what is going on in the air. Bottom-line, if you're taking care of your skin, you will fight the signs of aging. Based on your genes, and your lifestyle you may age faster than you'd like, but it doesn't always have anything to do with where you live or pollution.

So, I'm giving the power back to the people, and coming up with some product recommendations that will help in all aspects of your skin-care routine. Are you ready?

First off let me help you understand a couple things about yourself, go take this quiz and see what you may need. I also want my readers to understand that skincare is based on YOU, the best thing you can do for yourself is get a personalized skincare consultation done, so you can see your personal needs. Everyone is different... remember that.

Also remember that a simple routine is the easiest thing for you, and your skin. Cleanse, Tone, and Moisturize baby! Thats all you need.

I love to clean my skin with Cleansing Oils, I find that because I'm a little dry, keeping every piece of moisture I have the better. Cleansing with an oil will help lock all of that in without cleansing your natural oils right out of the ballpark. Some of my personal faves are Ceramide Cleansing Oil from Elizabeth Arden, Scratch Goods Tea Tree Cleansing Oil, or Josie Maran's Argan Cleansing oil.

Hydration is key when it comes to dealing with outside influences. Giving your skin that moisture and protection will help you combat anything that is about to come, even if its your hereditary issues that Grandma dealt with at her age. Keeping that supple bounce to your skin is always preserved with hydrating creams and collagen boosting vitamins. I love the Jasmine Skin Drink and Heavy Face Oils from Scratch goods. This #DynamcDuo locks in the moisture and keeps my skin feeling hydrated and fresh all night long.

Another favorite of mine is this SuperBoost from Elizabeth Arden I mix this little guy into my day cream sometimes and feel the vitamins going to work. This mainly works on the skin's surface layer to help your skin look and feel its best. It will boost anything you put it in, and will help your skins ability to boost its natural defenses. Its like my little miracle in a bottle, my quick fix, my little helper of radiance!

It may or may not fight pollution, but Kiehl's always has my back. The Cilantro & Orange Overnight treatment mask, was mentioned in a few of these pollution fighting articles that I've read, and rightfully so! It has some great properties to fight off and help replenish the skin's natural defenses. I personally love this one because as a defense mask, it ups your skin's natural rehab process. Its very gentle, and you don't have to wash it off which I think is really cool. I put it on at night, tissue it off after 5 or 10 minutes, and let the rest soak in all night long.

Remember that Sunscreen is a big part of helping your skin defend itself from the world, and those UV/UB rays are the worst for your skin. Sun Damage is the LEADING cause of skin cancer and aging... you do the math. I love the Flawless Future line, and this sunscreen is amazing. I would put that on my Holiday Wishlist for sure. Speaking of Sun Protection StriVectin has some amazing products, I recommend any of these anti-sun items.  I also really liked this awesome Hyaluronic Acid Serum, this plumped my skin way up!

Remember that locking in moisture is one of the best things you can do for your skin. I give myself a hefty dose of this mist multiple times a day especially if I'm not wearing any make-up. Its super hydrating and makes my skin feel a lot softer. My magic trick is to pile this on, in my nighttime routine before my 8 hour night cream. Try this out.... I swear you will love it. Mist your skin with a healthy dose of this, then apply the 8hr night cream (in the lavender scent) while your skin is still wet. Watch your hydration prayers be answered! :)
