Skate culture from the 70s has truly impacted the American cultural identity. From Vans to empty pools and drainage ditches, the iconic tricks and skaters like Hawk and Hosoi have become known as the fabric that makes up the skateboarding world. Yet, young people worldwide are pursuing style, individuality, creativity and having fun while creating a modern day skater story. While so much of the mythology behind the origin of skateboarding is centered around teenage boys based in Southern California, there was always a strong group of female pioneers including, Patti McGee, who helped shape skateboarding since its very start.

This editorial is dedicated to those brave women and girls, who first carved out their place in history as well as the women and girls worldwide, who continue on with the legacy of the sport. It is inspired by organizations like: Skateistan that uses skateboarding to rescue kids from the streets and transition them into a community that will teach them about leadership and independence. It is a reminder, that the future is female and that empowered girls can change the world.
