From Innocence to Impurity

Life was just a board game back then.  Taxes and money troubles only occurred in Monopoly.  We would play until the stars twinkled above and the street lights gleamed below.  The only things we were truly scared of, lived in our closets or under our beds.  So innocent...  and we couldn't wait to grow up.  The world was a place of magic and wonderment, where our only worries seemed to be the Saturday morning, cartoon line up.  

As we grow older, that innocence seems to slip away.  None of us can escape it, as we speedily embark upon a narrow tunnel of maturity.  Slowly, we forget how to play, how to use our imaginations, and how to laugh.  Suddenly, we're transformed into socially acceptable individuals as dictated by forces outside our control.  

As kids, we could be anything we wanted to be.  A Firefighter, an Astronaut, a Movie Star.  The world.... our oyster.  But much like a movie, our lives have been scripted for us.  Scripted by those who "know better."

The world becomes a scary place as we begin to understand how the adult world really works.  Where you were once eager to grow up, suddenly growing up feels like a trap.  Wars, depressions, disease, famine, finances...  the more you learn, the worse it seems to get.  

"If you don't go to college you won't get a good job.  If you don't get a good job, you won't make any money." 

And since money makes the world go 'round, compliant we become; accepting our fate.  

Thrown into adulthood, thousands of dollars in student loan debt, we tell ourselves it will all be alright.  This is what we are supposed to do.... What we were told to do.  Eventually we'll find a job, eventually we'll have a steady paycheck... slowly things will get better.  

Unable to find a job, we begin to sell ourselves short.  We begin to doubt ourselves and our abilities.  Do others see the world this way?  Do others feel the way we feel?  Something needs to change.  But how? 

What it all boils down to is that those who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are often the ones who do.  Life is not entirely about acceptance.  If you see something that you do not understand, something you disagree with, or you feel is wrong, don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard.  Be the change you wish to see in the world, and remember that you are the main character in your life.  Don’t let anyone else write your script for you, as many will try.
