Beauty Beat - Product Spotlight Skyn Iceland

Beauty products that are labeled as paraben free are becoming more and more popular. The questions many wonder, though, is what are these parabens? Why is there a need to worry about whether or not they are in our beauty products? Parabens are some of the most widely used preservatives in personal care products. Professionals explain that these type of preservatives help to stop fungus, bacteria and other microbes from growing in your cosmetics, especially in the moist, warm environment of your bathroom. Now, that all sounds pretty good right? We obviously don't want our favorite night creme getting all moldy or fungus crowing on our bar soap. So, what's the problem?

Well, sometime during the the 90s, parabens were classified as xenoestrogens agents. These are agents that mimic estrogen in the body. A condition known as “Estrogen disruption” has been linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues. In 2004 British cancer researcher Philippa Darbre, Ph.D., also found parabens present in malignant breast tumors. Due to these findings, experts in many countries are recommending putting limits on paraben levels in cosmetic products. Even more concerning, some organizations worry that if parabens are stored in the body, over time they could have a cumulative effect and pose a health risk to consumers that use products that contain them. It is important to note, though, that many opponents state that the amount of estrogen present in the parabens in use today isn't high enough to cause concern. Yet, it is important to be aware of what we put on and in our bodies.

Many brands are making it a point to be transparent about their use of preservatives and many are vowing to not utilize paraben agents in their products or touting themselves as "all natural" or "organic. It is really important to try a product before they make a full blown change. People with sensitive skin might to go for natural or organic products in an attempt to avoid skin allergic reactions, but sometimes, they still might have a reaction. If you're going to try a natural or organic product, allow some time to see if it really is compatible with your skin. Most professionals suggest that you will need to use any product for at least a month to see if it will work for you or give you any type of reaction. It is also important to pinpoint key concerns with your skin and go for botanical, natural or organic products that are specific to your needs. The idea is to simplify.

One key way of going organic is using botanicals. Botanicals were pretty much the first go to cosmetics in ancient times. Essentially, botanicals are plant-derived ingredients. Flowers were natural colorants, plant juices were used for soothing and protection from insects, and fragrant oils from florals were all used in ancient times. Historically, plants were the only way to produce products for cleaning, moisturizing and treating minor skin conditions. So, it seems like brands are coming full circle and going back to the old ways of doing things.
