Whether you believe it or not, returning to school for some, is symbolic of
partying, especially if you are headed to a college campus. So what better
movie to get you in the mood than Superbad?
A movie that does not require much thought and is great for a laugh. This movie
seems relatively down to earth. In the beginning, two inseparable outcasts,
Seth and Evan, in their senior year of high school, have to come to terms with being separated from one another for the first time as they embark on a night they won't likely forget. This is something all of us have had to deal with; growing up,
moving on, and leaving those you are close to for new experiences.
For those of you, who are more sentimental, and enjoy a decent romantic comedy, check out 10 Things I Hate About You. Basically, a modern day adaptation of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, this movie was released in the late 90’s and has a lot of big names from that time era. Cameron, a new arrival to Padua High School, lays his eyes upon beautiful Bianca, whom he is told is not allowed to date, unless her rebellious, mean spirited, shrew of a sister does so first. We have all got similar stories, seeing someone we are interested in and the lengths we go to pursue them.
Moving on to the darker side of things, a movie I highly recommend; Detachment. The perspective on this movie comes from a different angle, that of a substitute teacher. Henry takes on his latest assignment at an underfunded inner-city high school in New York, where he leaves a memorable impression on the students and staff alike. Everyone has had at least one teacher leave a permanent mark on the chalkboard that is their life.
Finishing with a classic, a must see, but probably already have. You know the one…. Bueller…. Bueller…. Bueller…. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. This movie is such an iconic film from the 80’s it does not even need an introduction. Save Ferris, a band that made an onscreen appearance in 10 Things I Hate About You, is actually a reference to this movie. But, I digress. Ferris will stop at nothing to make his “sick day” something that he and his friends will never forget.
These are just four movies that came to my mind, here are a few that I feel make honorable mention, Donnie Darko, Tommy Boy, and last, but not least The Faculty. All three are worth a watch, assuming you have not already seen them. As those sticky summer evenings transition into chilly fall nights, grab a warm blanket, dim the lights, make some popcorn, and throw in a movie. Rest up, as the school season starts soon enough, but rest assured, there is still some time left to accomplish your final summer desires.
